Voix EssentiELLES

Voice, decision-making and leadership are understood as vital elements of women’s empowerment. To be truly equitable, we must ensure that women are empowered and supported to play a role in the decision-making process – whether that be determining resource allocation or holding a leadership position.

When women and girls are empowered and supported to play a role in the decision-making process, then truly effective health policies and programs that consider gender differences and cultural sensitivities can be developed and implemented, informed by the lived experience of women and girls.

Voix EssentiELLES aims to strengthen women and girls, in all of their diversity, by meaningfully engaging them in decision-making processes and spaces that influence health policies and programs.

Managed by the Dakar-based policy and advocacy tank Speak Up Africa, and strategically supported and co-funded by Fondation CHANEL and The Global Fund to fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and malaria. Voix EssentiELLES will channel small funds through a dedicated fund and invest in the capacities of community based -based, grassroots organizations, groups and networks as well as their leaders.

COVID-19 has exacerbated the gender equality crisis. Around the world we have seen a rise in the violence against women, higher adverse economic impacts, and insufficient government responses. Yet, gender equality is critical to the survival of the planet and the rebuilding of more sustainable economies, societies, and political ecosystems. By working to achieve gender equality, everyone will win, and we must do more to ensure we reach the Sustainable Development Goal 5.
