Strategic Communications Officer


Located in Dakar, Senegal, Speak Up Africa is a policy and advocacy action tank dedicated to catalyzing leadership, enabling policy change, and increasing awareness for sustainable development in Africa. Through our platforms and relationships and with the help of our partners, we ensure that policy makers meet implementers, that solutions are showcased and that every sector – from individual citizens and civil society groups to global donors and business leaders – contribute critically to the dialogue while forming a blueprint for concrete action for public health and sustainable development.

Roles and Responsibilities

Speak Up Africa is looking for qualified candidates interested in public health policy for a Strategic Communications officer position. He/She will be leading the communication strategy design and implementation of the “Zero Malaria Business Leadership Initiative” (ZMBLI) conducted by Speak Up Africa and its strategic partner Ecobank. He/She will also support the advocacy and strategic communications needs of Speak Up Africa and its partners in the fight against malaria, including civil society organizations.

The Strategic Communications Officer will work under the Strategic Communications Manager supervision and closely with the Malaria Program Coordinator and ZMBLI Country Teams for a greater involvement of the private sector in the fight against malaria in Africa. More precisely, for:

ZMBLI, he/she will:

  • Lead the development of Speak Up Africa’s strategic communication objectives and the ambition to engage the private sector, policy makers and community stakeholders to support malaria control and elimination
  • Strengthen the Ecobank staff and stakeholders’ skills in terms of communications and advocacy
  • Identify and develop engagement plans for influencers and champions in the 6 countries of the “Zero Malaria Business Leadership Initiative”
  • Support the resource mobilization, and communications and advocacy activities of the initiative
  • Present the initiative and other malaria-elimination activities at events and other strategic meetings
  • Develop relationships with/and organize a database with media outlets in the six countries of the “Zero Malaria Business Leadership Initiative »

The malaria portfolio, he/she will:

  • Develop key messages and tools for social media intended to amplify the “Zero Malaria Starts with Me” and “March to Kigali” campaigns and the “Zero Malaria Business Leadership Initiative” on the Speak Up Africa and Ecobank group platforms
  • Develop communications materials (online, print, promotional) in English and French
  • Prepare, draft and coordinate with the broader malaria team, e-communications materials, such as newsletters, to further communication on both campaigns and the ZMBLI initiative
  • Consolidate, organize and update distribution lists pertaining to malaria and CSO related ecommunications

Overall coordination and external relations, he/she will:

  • Work in collaboration with the Malaria Program Coordinator on all the campaigns concerning malaria, including media engagement and project narrative
    • Development of monthly reports to submit to the Malaria Program Coordinator and the Strategic Communications Manager
    • Participate in weekly coordination meetings and hold meetings with the country program managers to prepare events related to malaria
    • Elaboration of SMART goals approved by the manager to discuss quarterly performance
    • Systematic archiving of documents online (Dropbox)
    • Use of tasks management software in collaboration with the graphic team
  • Represent Speak Up Africa at regional and global malaria-elimination events, including online meetings and participation in working groups.
  • Support other advocacy and communications activities identified by the Strategic Communications Manager, including gathering and archiving of information and content on Dropbox

Requested Profile

  • At least 5 years of experience in the following areas:
    • Development and/or implementation of communication strategies and use of evidence in communications
    • Development of strategic partnerships
    • Digital communication, website and social media content management
    • Experience in sustainable development, particularly in the social sectors (health, education, sanitation, etc.) in an NGO, research organization or other
    • Implementation of advocacy initiatives and campaigns
  • Excellent level of spoken and written language in French and English
  • Possess strong organizational, summarizing and report writing skills
  • Experience working in the public and private sectors is highly preferable
  • Solid experience in creating literature reviews, summarizing complex information and producing advocacy materials
  • Some experience in supporting successful partnership building/stakeholder awareness initiatives
  • Some experience working with members of governments, private sector companies, NGOs and/or multilateral organizations
