Headquartered in Dakar, Senegal, Speak Up Africa is a Policy and Advocacy Action Tank dedicated to catalyzing leadership, enabling policy change, and increasing awareness for sustainable development in Africa. Through our platforms and relationships and with the help of our partners, we ensure that policy makers meet implementers, that solutions are showcased and that every sector contributes critically to the dialogue and strives to form the blueprints for concrete action for sustainable development – from individual citizens and civil society groups to global donors and business leaders.

Roles and Responsibilities

Under the supervision of the Strategic Communications Manager, the Media Relations Officer shall be responsible for leading the development and implementation of the external media strategies of Speak Up Africa, including through active media outreach and knowledge management. More specifically, the Media Relations Officer will:

External relations

  • Develop a comprehensive media strategy including active outreach to regional and pan-African outlets and institutional champions engagement, including liaison
  • Facilitate liaison with media outlets regarding Speak Up Africa’s Institutional champions engagement.
  • Organize media briefings and press conference or any events relating to media engagement.
  • Build strategic partnerships with media outlets (at least one top-tier anglophone and one top-tier francophone per year) while overseeing liaison with media contacts at national, regional and international level including the Speak Up Africa WhatsApp media group.
  • Develop and disseminate bi-monthly newsletters to media outlets and journalists to amplify Speak Up Africa’s actions and manage Speak Up Africa media WhatsApp Group.
  • Drafting and review of key media materials including press releases, opinions pieces, interviews and podcasts while leading their broad and targeted dissemination.
  • Implement overall Speak Up Africa Lines of Impact initiative while proactively looking for passionate journalists to increase the roster of participants and building the capacity of existing media fellows.
  • Monthly reporting to the Strategic Communications manager.

Institutional materials and data base

  • Develop and regularly update Speak Up Africa press kit (long and short version) including one pager for each one of Speak Up Africa’s programs and initiatives.
  • Monitor and evaluate the use and effectiveness of media materials and reach.
  • Structure and regularly update Speak Up Africa’s media database.

Internal coordination and monitoring of productions

  • Develop and archive communication materials in Speak Up Africa communications tracker, including digital, such as publications, press releases and clippings, photographs, audio-visual materials, web resources, etc.
  • In coordination with Policy and Research Officer, capitalize and establish lessons learned on internal and external communications.

Requested Profile

The position is based in Dakar, Senegal, with 30% possibility of travel to other countries according to the needs of the projects.

A master’s degree in media relations, communications, public information, social sciences or related field is required.

  • Demonstrated ability to work cooperatively within a team.
  • Strong communication skills and experience working in multidisciplinary and multilingual teams
  • Developed understanding of needs of media and public audiences, preferably with NGO relevant approach.
  • Strong organizational, synthesis, reporting and social media skills.
  • Outstanding article-writing and editing skills.
  • Must be proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Power Point, etc.) and the usual practice of desktop and electronic communication tools and software
  • Proven technical knowledge of a wide range of multimedia, web and digital tools is required, including MailChimp, SurveyMonkey and Drupal.
  • Perfect understanding and writing skills in English and French are mandatory.
